Fundamental British Values

At Thomas’s Clapham we explicitly and actively teach Values Education. Fundamental British Values are visible throughout our school in the following ways:

Thomas’s Clapham ensures pupils develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence. 

Daily praise and recognition are central to our rewards system. Children are awarded Values points, House points, Head Masters Initials, Golden Unicorns, Good Book nominations, Head Master Colours and Sports Colours. The Headmaster also often writes to students to celebrate success. As a community we celebrate achievements in assemblies, on Twitter and in our weekly bulletin. Our House system allows for children to experience success through a range of multi-age activities and events. 

Thomas’s Clapham ensures pupils distinguish right from wrong. 

Children are active participants in our recognition and consequences process which is fair and consistent for all. They are expected to demonstrate appropriate behaviour at all times and they have input into the creation of class rules. Additionally, as part of our Inspiring Living curriculum, we teach the STOP, THINK, DO programme. 

Thomas’s Clapham encourages pupils to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative and understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality in which the school is situated and to society more widely. 

We have very strong links with our charities, especially The CAIRN Trust and the TSF. Our sports tours often fundraise for the communities we visit and we hold an annual TSF community awareness day. We run a program with Queens Court Residential Care Home where we have students go and share their work with the residents, and the residents come to visit Thomas’s Clapham. Where appropriate we hold special days to celebrate world cultures and make trips to different faith’s places of worship.

Thomas’s Clapham enables pupils to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England. 

We have built strong links with the Northcote Safer Neighbourhood Team who keep us informed about our local community. Our broad curriculum, trips program and assemblies provide explicit examples of how the society we live in is structured and the services that are available to us. 

Thomas’s Clapham encourages tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling pupils to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures.

Religious Education and Philosophy is taught from Reception through to Year 8. Discussion of various faiths and cultures is incorporated into this and other curricula. Our staff model tolerance and respect and we always look for opportunities to learn from other cultures. We aim to empower children to challenge stereotypes and celebrate individuality. Our school library has a selection of journals and newspapers which offer a balanced view of the world in which the children live and the children in the Upper School receive specific Current Affairs lessons.

Thomas’s Clapham actively promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Equality
is paramount at Thomas’s Clapham. Our Values Education program aims to ensure no member of our community ever feels marginalised, disrespected or discriminated against.
Democracy is all around us at Thomas’s Clapham. Our School Council Representatives, ABC and Green Unicorns are democratically elected by their classmates and all Year 8 students have a position of responsibility within the school. Children attend committee meetings and assume the responsibility of chair and secretary where appropriate. Circle Time, year group assemblies, questionnaires, form time and our tutor system provide children with a platform to communicate and debate their views and beliefs. National elections, current affairs and school rules are debated fairly and evenly. Anti Bullying is addressed through the Anti Bullying Committee and through careful tracking of behaviour; staff address any inappropriate or intolerant behaviours.
