Physical Education and Sport

We aim to provide each and every pupil with a positive physical education experience within an environment where each individual feels successful. Our curriculum ensures that the children receive a well-structured, progressive programme of physical activity that prepares them for sporting life and well-being at senior schools and beyond.

Our philosophy

To develop excellence in sport and physical education whilst fulfilling the potential of every child.

This can be broken down into three areas:

  • Entitlement: We believe every child deserves the same quality of experience but at their level, and where learning is optimum.
  • Engagement: We strive to create an environment where all the children are engaged and learning.
  • Enjoyment: It must be fun! We want our children to be active, appropriately challenged and successful.

Physical Education

The PE curriculum at Thomas's is very generously provisioned in time, staff and resources. We have a fully inclusive approach in which all children progress at their optimum pace and achieve their potential with confidence and enthusiasm.

All year groups from Reception to Year 6 are taught in all disciplines by specialist PE staff. Along with Prep School sports of football, rugby, cricket, netball, rockey and rounders, gymnastics, swimming, athletics, team games, cross-country, tennis, dance and a vast range of after school clubs are on offer at Thomas's Fulham.

We have a gym space within the building and plenty of play space on site. We also have access to a hard court area and South Park, which is immediately opposite the school, for all our curriculum lessons.

Children in Reception receive a gymnastics and games lesson once a week. Those in Year 1 start swimming lessons along with their games and gymnastics lessons. Boys also receive an extra games lesson in line with the Prep School sport of that term. Girls can also choose to take part in these lessons instead of ballet.

In Year 2 the whole year group comes together to have a double lesson of games, as well as their gymnastics and swimming lesson. They also have the extra games session, which girls can again choose to take part in instead of ballet.

In the Prep School children are taught as groups of boys and girls and have two sessions of games per week, a mid-morning session and an afternoon session when fixtures normally take place. Pupils in Year 3 and 4 still attend swimming lessons. All children in the Prep School receive a gymnastics lesson in their class groups.

Sport

There is a full programme of fixtures, competitions and tournaments with opportunities for all to be involved. We follow a traditional games programme which sets the pupils up well for their involvement in sport at senior schools. Football, rugby and cricket are taught to the boys, while the girls are taught netball, hockey and rounders. Lacrosse is introduced to the girls in Years 5 and 6 and our provision of clubs allows boys and girls to swap between the traditional sports. E.g. Boys are welcome to attend hockey club in the Lent term. All of the sports are taught by specialist teachers.

We take advantage of a number of sports venues to ensure the children get the best experience in all aspects of PE. South Park offers football, rugby and cricket pitches and access to 3 netball courts. Hurlingham Park is within walking distance and has facilities for rugby, football and hockey on a full sized astro turf.

Being one of four schools allows for healthy interschool competition, which the children relish. We also have a strong record in matches against other local schools and regularly attend tournaments and festivals held by other prep schools in and around London.

Whatever the skill level or ability, our aim is for all children to enjoy being involved in sport and to strive to be the best they can.
